Personally, I'm hoping for a Victoria: Total War set between 1815-1914. I'm hoping that you can settle regions (so that would model the Scramble for Africa), and a combat system to be similar to Fall of the Samurai's. I hope there are events in-game for German and Italian unification, revolutions (not just between Democracy, Constitutional Monarchy, and Absolute Monarchy like it is in ETW and NTW, but also for Communism and Dictatorships), and a westernization/modernization mechanic for countries like Japan and China.
Alternatively, they could do micro campaigns, like creating new campaigns for each scenario. For example, they'd have a North America campaign where the map is strictly focused on North America between 1865-1890, and you'd have the option of playing as the US, the Mexicans, or the Native Americans. You could recycle the same map and do an American Civil War campaign and have the player choose between the Confederates and the Union, and have it be set between 1861-1867.
Anyways, what do you guys think should be the next historical Total War, and what mechanics should your favorite candidate have? Do keep in mind that CA said they wouldn't redo a Total War (so no Medieval III, unfortunately).
