For agents in other games, see Agent (Gameplay Mechanic).
Agents are a gameplay mechanic in Total War: Shogun 2.
General Information[]
Agents are individuals that aid their clans in various ways. Like armies, they move around the world map, and can't move once their movement points have been depleted.
Agents gain experience by performing actions, and level up after gaining sufficient experience. All agents require the same amount of experience to level. Successful direct actions grant 15 experience, failed actions grant 3 experience, while turns spent doing passive actions (such as inspiring armies or establishing spy networks) also grant 3 experience points per turn. Leaving agents on the field grants no experience points, so it's generally best to keep them active each turn. Each level up grants two skill points that agents can use to improve their odds of successful actions. At levels two, four and six agents also gain retainers that the player can choose from to further improve their skills. The retainers are randomly assigned. Agents can also gain traits after completing certain actions.
Level | Exp requirement |
---|---|
2 | 20 |
3 | 40 |
4 | 60 |
5 | 100 |
6 | 180 |
There are several types of agents in Shogun 2, listed below:
Ninja[]
- Main article: Ninja (Total War: Shogun 2)
Recruited from Sake Dens, ninjas can assassinate other agents, sabotage buildings, sabotage armies, increase the line of sight and movement speed of armies they're attached to, detect enemy agents and armies, and increase provinces' line of sight, repression, and agent detection.
Geisha[]
- Main article: Geisha (Total War: Shogun 2)
Recruited from a Infamous Mizu Shobai District, geisha are highly skilled assassins.
Metsuke[]
- Main article: Metsuke
Metsuke are trained from markets. They can bribe other armies to join the player's clan, detect enemy ninja, oversee armies they're attached to (raising general loyalty and reducing the risk of the army being bribed), oversee towns and increase their tax income by reducing corruption, and apprehend enemy agents.
Monk[]
- Main article: Monk (Total War: Shogun 2)
Monks are trained from Buddhist Temples by Buddhist factions. They raise the happiness of castle towns they're placed in, convert or perplex other agents, convert the local population to Buddhism, demoralize enemy armies, incite other regions to revolt, and raise the morale of armies they're placed in.
Ikko Monk[]
- Main article: Ikko Monk
Ikko monks are unique to the Ikko Ikki, and trained from Jodo Shinshu Temples. Aside from their seperate faith and slighlty altered skill tree, Ikko monks are identical to monks.
Missionary[]
- Main article: Missionary (Total War: Shogun 2)
Missionaries are available to Christian clans, and function much like monks and Ikko monks. They are recruited from Chapels. While they have the same abilities as monks, their skill trees are very different, making them better and worse at certain actions.
General[]
- Main article: General (Total War: Shogun 2)
Gained when individual units distinguish themselves in battle, through random events, or when sons come of age, generals lead armies and navies. Generals are units in addition to agents, and can gain battle experience in addition to agent experience. Like other units, they may be killed in the field of battle.
