TW3K ANCILLARY ITEMS

Player equipping Ancillary items in Total War: Three Kingdoms

Ancillaries or Ancillary items can be gained by the player over the course of a campaign in the Total War series. They are traits or followers that increase or decrease the statistics of generals, admirals, and agents.

Empire: Total War[]

In Empire: Total War, characters gain ancillaries over time. In contrast to traits, which are gained or lost after doing specific actions, ancillaries are granted more randomly by the game. Most ancillaries are beneficial, granting increased skill in performing actions or morale for troops, but some are negative. Characters may gain only three ancillaries at maximum. Ancillaries may not be removed, and stay with characters until they die; after characters die, ancillaries disappear with them.

Napoleon: Total War[]

Ancillaries act in a near-identical fashion in Napoleon: Total War as they do in Empire: Total War.

Total War: Shogun 2[]

In Total War: Shogun 2, ancillaries are renamed as Retainers and are acquired by generals and agents every time they achieve an even-number level (2, 4, 6). Upon leveling up, players may choose between one of two randomly chosen ancillaries. Ancillaries that are gained at higher levels tend to have stronger statistics. As with previous Total War games, ancillaries per character are capped at three maximum.

Fall of the Samurai[]

Retainers act in a near-identical fashion in Fall of the Samurai as they do in Total War: Shogun 2.

Total War: Three Kingdoms[]

Main article: Ancillary (Total War: Three Kingdoms)

Ancillaries can be attached or equipped by characters. When equipped to characters, they provide various bonuses and enable abilities. Items are divided into different Quality according to how likely they are to appear.

Obtain[]

There's a few ways to get ancillaries; player accrue them over time. Players can take them from defeated characters and can find them in random events. Certain provincial buildings create them as well[1] such as the Weapon Craftsmen and Armour Craftsmen.
