Biography[]
Son of the Cheruscan chieftain Segimerus, Arminius was given to Rome as a child hostage. He grew up in a Roman environment, received a Roman education and military training and even became a Roman citizen… but he never forgot his roots. When campaigning in Germania under the Roman general Varus, Arminius and his troops turned on the Romans and slaughtered three entire legions in an ambush at Teutoburg Forest. This was the greatest defeat the Roman army had known for centuries, and even though Arminius’ victory didn’t stop the Romans for long, it demoralized the entire empire. It was this defeat that triggered the Roman commander Germanicus to rampage through the forests of Germania, seeking bloody revenge.[2]
