Those these men are not the product of a cohesive military training program, the use of the bow as a hunting tool is widespread, so the pool of those skilled in its use is large. Life on the borders of powerful states such as Greece and Persia is tenuous, but such simple folk defend their meagre possessions so fiercely that attacking them is often more trouble than it's worth.
Skills learned on the hunt translate well to the battlefield. These men are able to shoot with accuracy, frustrating and disrupting enemy formations. They can also easily hide in vegetation, ready to spring out in ambush. Poorly armed beside their bows and wearing no armour, they are next to useless should the enemy come to grips with them though.
