Life on the borders of powerful states such as Greece and Persia is tenuous, but such simple folk defend their meagre possessions so fiercely that attacking them is often more trouble than it's worth. Smaller lighter mounts are often more valuable in warmer climes than heavier horses which require more water and feed and cope less well with the heat. Lightly armoured with spears and shields, these men are best in the role of scouts or for harrassing lighter troops and cutting down those fleeing the battlefield. The prospect of loot and the desire to make a name for themselves can lead to indiscipline through, including unauthorised charges. If they can master these often self-destructive urges, their best chance of success is to come at the enemy from an unexpected direction and crash into an undefended flank or rear.
