Barbarian Horse Archers are a type of missile cavalry unit available to the barbarian factions in Rome: Total War: Alexander.
Description[]
Horse archers are common amongst the barbarians whose lands border those of the Persians and Greeks. Their mobility in open terrain makes them ideally suited to the kind of hit-and-run warfare favoured by these fierce tribal peoples. On light nimble mounts they can dart in close to enemy formations to unleash a volley of arrows before retreating, or maintain a steady needling fire whilst whirling in a tight bewildering formation. Only steady troops under a strong and competent commander can endure this irritating behaviour for long before running for their lives or succumbing to the urge to rush at their tormentors. Those who choose the latter option will soon find that coming to grips with such mobile adversaries is no easy task, especially with an arrow lodged in the throat! One answer is to respond in kind, arrow for arrow. Since horse archers wear little or no armour in order to maximise their mobility, they are vulnerable to missiles, and any which do inadvertently stray too close to melee units will swiftly be cut to pieces, and no doubt danced upon subsequently!
