Barbarian Sickle-men are a type of heavy infantry unit available to the barbarian factions in Rome: Total War: Alexander.
Description[]
Sickle-men are infantry armed with short heavy bronze war sickles well-suited to inflicting massive injuries on almost any opponent which they can come to grips with. Wearing bronze breastplates, greaves and helms and carrying a large shield, they are able to trade blows with heavy infantry and even heavy cavalry once it has become bogged down in a melee, though their lack of spears means they will suffer casualties when charged by horse units.
Historically, sickle-men were used by several of the peoples around Anatolia and beyond. During the battle of Salamis around 496 BC, the Cyprian prince Onesilos came face to face with the Persian commander Artybios whose warhorse was trained to rear and kick. Onesilos seized a shield and deflected the animal's hooves, giving a comrade the opportunity to sever its forelegs with a war sickle before killing the Persian general.
