Life on the borders of powerful states such as Greece and Persia is tenuous, but such simple folk defend their meagre possessions so fiercely that attacking them is often more trouble than it's worth.
There is no weapon cheaper or more simple than the spear and large groups of men armed with them are a threat to most units on the battlefield, especially when the spear is complemented by a large shield. As such, spearmen usually make up the bulk of most armies. With only basic training, they are less disciplined than elite troops and may charge without orders, eager for glory and loot!
