Biography[]

Nothing is known of Bian Rang's early life, but he rose through the ranks of the Han Dynasty's administration as a scholar, master wordsmith, and poet under the reign of Emperor Ling. Eventually, he was appointed as the administrator of Jiujiang, where he proved to be a mediocre governor at best. By 192, the Han Empire had all but collapsed, and Rang lost his position in Jiujiang. He travelled back to his hometown, which was now under the control of the warlord Cao Cao.

Once he was home, Rang began writing more poems and rhapsodies. However, he was not very fond of Cao Cao's leadership and said so openly. When word eventually reached the warlord, he had Bian Rang arrested and later executed in 193. Most of Rang's works have been lost to history, yet a few of his works have been preserved to this day.
