There are extensive and easily accessible deposits of clay in this province. This can be fired to produce pottery and tiles. Money spent here will improve production and so help with building construction.

Craftsmanship of all kinds has always been admired in Japan. Even simple objects were considered worthy of being made with care, and being beautiful. This applied to household items as much as rich silks and valuable swords. The coming of the industrial world meant that these ideas were in danger of being swept away, but there is an echo of the idea that things worth doing or making are worth doing well in "kaizen", or the concept of continuous improvement. Anything and everything is reviewed and changed to make it better by everyone, even on a factory floor or a production line. Craftsmanship is still treasured: even today "living national treasures", the absolute masters of their arts and crafts, are celebrated and supported by the government and people.

Regions with claypits are particularly worth developing due to the construction discount clay pits provide. This makes provinces with clay specialties excellent locations to upgrade buildings in, as they return their investment more quickly.

Unlike some other specialties, clay is not a resource that can be traded, and the wealth growth and region wealth clay buildings provide are relatively small. This is still better than nothing, however, so provinces with clay specialties tend to be slightly wealthier than provinces with no specialty. When upgraded to its final tier, clay specialty buildings provide a global discount to buildings, making even the poorest clay specialty province very useful.

Compared to their traditional counterpart, potteries, brickworks produce 200 less initial wealth, but produce 2 more town wealth growth per turn. This means that after 100 turns, brickworks start becoming more profitable per turn than potteries, but it takes a total of 200 turns for brickworks to start making more total money than potteries. Given that 200 turns constitutes the majority of a campaign, and that money early on is much harder to come by than money at the end of the campaign, potteries are almost always a better building option. This is particularly true for regions that have poor public order, as the money required for buildings and garrison troops to counteract the -2 happiness would far outweigh any eventual economic benefit brickworks would provide. The only exception to the rule is if one is building to increase modernisation quickly. Brickworks pay for themselves in 77-101 turns depending on whether their order penalty necessitates the training and maintaining of garrison troops. They may also pay for themselves if 135,000 is spent faction-wide on buildings, or 67,500 is spent on the region, or a combination of all three.
