Biography[]

Cai He is a fictional character made up for Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In reality, Cai Mao was the only son of Cai Feng. When Liu Biao was faced with a succession crisis between his two sons, Liu Cong and Liu Qi, Cai Mao supported Cong alongside others. Once Cong inherited his father's land, he immediately surrendered it all to Cao Cao. Cai Mao and his brothers defected as well, leaving Cai He under the service of Cao Cao.

Cai He was deployed as a spy in the army of Sun Quan. He pretended to defect to Quan's side but was planning to send information back to Cao Cao. However, one of Quan's generals, Zhou Yu, was well aware of this. He fed Cai He false information which led to a miscalculated assault by Cao Cao. Just before the Battle of Red Cliffs began, Zhou Yu captured Cai He and had him beheaded, sending his head back to Cao Cao.
