Overview[]
Chen Gong is a mediocre prime minister/heir/faction leader. The tiny boost to public order he grants is meaningless for most factions, and he makes his faction more vulnerable to being spied upon due to his cautious trait. He has nothing significant to boost his authority, either.
Chen Gong is about as good as generic strategists when it comes to being an administrator for the most part; the one additional bonus he has is his Defiant trait, making enemies suffer more from attrition. This can situationally make him a good administrator for a province that is constantly under attack.
On the battlefield, Chen Gong has a unique skill, Analyze Weakness, which is a constantly active skill that decreases nearby enemies' evasion and armor. This is somewhat similar to the Wisdom of the River skill, except Analyze Weakness decreases evasion and armor by a smaller amount, but lasts forever. Analyze Weakness replaces the generic Inspiring Surge skill, making Chen Gong less effective than other strategists when he is fighting with allies that rely on activated abilities.
Analyze Weakness only decreases evasion and armor by 20. While this seems like a significant downgrade compared to Wisdom of the River's -100%, Analyze Weakness' -20% means that it reduces these values by 20 points, not 20%. For example, if it is used against a general with 40 points of armor, it reduces his armor to 20, effectively reducing it by half.
Chen Gong is a particularly relevant character for Lü Bu and his 194 start. Not only is he one of the only initial starting strategists for Lü Bu, his Analyze Weakness skill is a huge benefit given that Lü Bu's campaign focuses on him defeating as many enemy generals as possible. By keeping Chen Gong close to Lü Bu as he duels enemies, the player can ensure that Lü Bu has a strong advantage during dueling and can move on to new targets as quickly as possible.
Biography[]
Chen Gong was born in central China, where he was apparently a local celebrity. He was Filial & Incorrupt, heroic, and a friendly individual with many friends and associates to rely on. While he was certainly popular, he wasn't exactly the brightest. During the chaos of the 190s, Chen Gong joined up with the warlord Cao Cao, where he became an officer. While in Cao Cao's service, Xun Yu described Chen Gong as being decently talented, though rather slow at making decisions, effectively calling him stupid.
When Liu Dai was killed by Yellow Turbans, it left the admittedly small area Dai ruled over leaderless. Chen Gong, a native of the area, travelled to the region and called in his vast network of friends to support Cao Cao, eventually convincing them to submit to the warlord willingly. Despite his praises of Cao Cao to the natives, Chen Gong's relationship with the warlord was rather shaky. Gong was convinced he was slowly losing Cao Cao's favour and would eventually be dismissed and fade into obscurity.
When a certain Lü Bu, on the run after killing Dong Zhuo, launched a rebellion in Cao Cao's territory, Chen Gong was quick to defect, hoping for an opportunity to rise through the ranks. Chen Gong became an advisor to Lü Bu but, doubting Chen Gong's loyalties, he all but ignored the man. Soon after, Cao Cao recaptured his home commandery forcing Lü Bu to flee east. Chen Gong accompanied Lü Bu as he travelled east and, to the surprise of nobody, immediately betrayed and overthrew Liu Bei. This led to Cao Cao and Liu Bei forming an unlikely alliance against Lü Bu. By 198 AD, Lü Bu and Chen Gong were captured and both sentenced to death.
Apparently, Cao Cao still held some fondness for Chen Gong. Despite executing him, the warlord made sure that Chen Gong's family was spared and even looked after, making one wonder whether or not he truly was slipping from Cao Cao's favour and if he could've risen to greatness had he simply remained loyal.
