Biography[]

It is unknown when Cheng Pu was born, but he first appears in the records as a minor official in China's administration. He later joined Sun Jian's army in his fight against the Yellow Turban Rebellion in the early 180s. He continued serving under Sun Jian in the coalition against Dong Zhuo.

When Sun Jian died in 191, Cheng Pu continued serving under his son, Sun Ce. Cheng Pu played a major role in the conquest of Lujiang commandery, later scoring major victories against generals under Liu Yao. Cheng Pu's claim to fame would come when Sun Ce was heavily outnumbered by a group of bandits and rebels. Despite having no troops at the ready, Cheng Pu charged in practically by himself, breaking the encirclement around Ce's army. This earned Cheng Pu his famous title, 'The General of the Household Who Defeats Bandits'.

After the death of Sun Ce, Pu continued to serve Sun Quan. He commanded Sun Quan's left flank at the legendary Battle of Red Cliffs, and managed to score major victories against the forces of Cao Cao. After Cao Cao abandoned the area and fled north, Cheng Pu gave chase, defeating Cao Ren in a follow-up battle. For his deeds at the Red Cliffs, Cheng Pu was promoted to a Major General, as well as the administrator of Jiangxia commandery.

Cheng Pu continued serving under Sun Quan, but he disappears from the history books around the late 210s. His final fate is unknown.
