Commercial Farming is a type of farming building in Fall of the Samurai.
Description[]
Without the farmer, all will hunger.
Commercial farming provides a substantial agricultural income, and helps industry grow by providing food for the factory workers.
Industrial revolutions cannot work without agricultural revolutions before them: without an increase in food production and fewer labourers being needed, there is firstly little surplus food to feed the workers needed in the new industries and, secondly, no workers to go into the factories. Such was the demand for workers in England's Industrial Revolution, not to mention the profiteering of many factory owners, that entire families left the land and worked in factories. Women and children, rather conveniently, could be paid far less than their menfolk, while performing jobs that were just as hard and dangerous. This pattern is being repeated in some developing parts of the world even today.
General Information[]
Requires 5000 koku, 6 turns, Tenant Fields. Can be upgraded to Zaibatsu Fields.
- +1400 to wealth generated by trade in this province
- +2 per turn to town growth from industrial buildings within this province
- -1 to happiness from modernisation
Clan Effects
- +1 to modernisation (clan development)
Farms may be built in every province. Every province has a soil quality modifier which determines the amount of wealth that is generated by farming. Provinces with more fertile soil make much more money through farming, so prioritizing upgrading them over more barren farms makes money more quickly.
Commercial farming is the last upgrade to farms that can be accessed without research. The next and final tier, Zaibatsu Fields, requires a mid-late game technology, so commercial farms are the highest upgrade for a considerable portion of the game. They pay for themselves moderately quickly, though they come with the added wrinkle of reducing happiness; they are best built in regions with high public order and good soil.
