Overview[]

On the battlefield, Da Qiao has two skills not available to generic commanders: Qiao Sisters and Mending. Qiao Sisters requires both Da Qiao and Xiao Qiao to be present on the battlefield as allies. It grants all friendly units within 5,000 m +10 morale and immunity to terror. Mending allows Da Qiao to heal nearby generals. Healing is rare and valuable on the battlefield, so access to this skill makes Da Qiao a valuable addition to any army.

Biography[]

The elder of the "Two Qiaos of Jiangdong", Da Qiao (literally "older Qiao") was born in Lujiang commandery alongside her younger sister Xiao Qiao. Renowned for their beauty, they went on to marry prominent figures in Wu. Da Qiao married Sun Ce, while Xiao Qiao married his friend and general Zhou Yu. Nothing else is known about them.

In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the Qiao Sisters play a much larger role. Cao Cao learns of the existence of the two beautiful sisters and sets out on a quest to take them as his concubines. When Zhou Yu finds out about Cao Cao's ambition to take his wife, he puts pressure on Sun Quan -- the late Sun Ce's brother and successor -- to ally with Liu Bei against Cao Cao, leading to a series of events that resulted in the famous Battle of Red Cliffs in which Cao Cao was soundly defeated. The novel, therefore, twists the battle to be about love, yet this was simply not the case in reality. One way or another, the Qiao Sisters and their supposed role in the Battle of Red Cliffs became popularised through folk talks and Chinese opera for years to come and remain popular to this day.
