Biography[]

Dian Wei is remembered as a loyal bodyguard to Cao Cao. He was a giant of a man who supposedly had superhuman strength. He is very similar to Xu Chu, another giant bodyguard of Cao Cao who possessed great strength. Born roughly around 170 in Henan, little is known about Dian Wei's early life until he first appears in the criminal records. Dian Wei was hired to assassinate someone named Li Yong as part of a local feud. Disguised as a noble he entered Li's home unopposed and killed both him and his wife with a hidden dagger. News quickly spread and Dian Wei fled town. Legend has it, he was pursued by hundreds of bounty hunters but not a single one dared to face the giant man in combat. Eventually, Dian Wei lost his pursuers and briefly disappears from history.

He reappears in 190 when he and a small group of men joined the army of warlord Zhang Miao who was part of the coalition against Dong Zhuo. The officers in Zhang's army were impressed by Dian's size. In a famous event, multiple men failed to hold up a giant flag on a windy hilltop even with their combined efforts. Dian Wei approached the hilltop and proceeded to hold the flag upright with just one hand as the other soldiers looked on in awe. Eventually, Dian Wei ended up under the command of Xiahou Dun, a famed general and cousin of Cao Cao. Dian Wei's first action under Xiahou Dun was in the campaign against Lü Bu, who had led a revolt against Cao Cao. Wei is credited with leading a small group of armoured men against the enemy, taking out many enemy riders with javelins and ultimately driving them back. Cao Cao took notice and was very impressed, making the giant man both a captain in the army and his personal bodyguards.

Dian Wei's loyalty to Cao Cao was absolute and he took his job very seriously. He would serve on the frontlines of any battles, but would always keep one eye on his lord. When not in combat, Dian Wei would always stand outside of his master's tent and would rarely leave his presence. When he slept, it would usually be only a short walk away from Cao Cao. He was known for wielding two massive Jis, both of which weighed around 40 pounds.

Dian Wei's undoing would come in 197. Cao Cao had invaded the land of Zhang Xiu, who surrendered without a fight. When Cao Cao arrived, a celebration began between the two armies. Cao Cao took an interest in Zhang Xiu's widowed mother and took her as his concubine. Zhang Xiu was furious, and before long his entire army launched a surprise attack on Cao Cao's camp. The warlord barely managed to escape from the battle thanks to his son, Cao Ang, who gave his father his horse after Cao Cao's died in a hail of arrows, sacrificing his own life in the process.

Dian Wei had gathered a small group of soldiers and sought to buy time for his lord to escape. Together they guarded a small gate and came under attack from a much larger force. One by one his allies fell around him until Dian Wei was all alone. He had taken out many enemies with his huge weapons but he had been heavily wounded during the fight and his Jis were broken. Thinking quickly, Dian Wei proceeded to take a few enemy corpses off the ground and used them as weapons, reportedly killing a few more soldiers with the bodies of their fallen comrades before finally dying from blood loss.

When Cao Cao heard of Dian Wei's sacrifice, he reportedly broke into tears. He ordered a small raid to recover the man's body so he could be buried in a luxuriously decorated tomb in his hometown. Every time Cao Cao was in the area he would reportedly make a stop at the tomb to mourn. Wei's son, Dian Man, was made a commander and was kept close to the warlord's side with Cao Pi later naming Man a Second Marquis for his father's service.
