— in-game flavour text

Diao Chan was a serving girl in the employ of the minister Wang Yun. The two were very close and Wang Yun considered her almost as his own daughter. Upon seeing her master’s distress over the fate of the empire under Dong Zhuo’s tyranny, she bravely volunteered, and succeeded, to drive a wedge between Lü Bu and Dong Zhuo. She is also known as one of the Four Beauties of ancient China.[1]

Biography[]

Diaochan is a fictitious introduction to the story of the Three Kingdoms period as described in the famous novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Notably, she serves as an explanation for Lü Bu's historical betrayal of Dong Zhuo. Diaochan was a very beautiful servant girl and foster daughter of the minister Wang Yun, then serving under Dong Zhuo. Supposedly, the disgruntled Wang Yun wanted to rid himself of Dong Zhuo and decided to enlist Lü Bu, the adopted son of Dong Zhuo, for his plot.

He plotted with Diaochan to drive a wedge between Dong Zhuo and Lü Bu. When both were in agreement, Wang Yun offered Diaochan as a concubine to Dong Zhuo, which he eagerly accepted. At the same time, he betrothed her to Lü Bu. Then, Diaochan cleverly manipulated both men into fighting for her love. Dong Zhuo eventually chose to keep her as a concubine, which enraged Lü Bu. He sought out Wang Yun, and Yun recruited Lü Bu into his plot to assassinate Dong Zhuo. The Warrior Without Equal agreed and would eventually strike the killing blow against Dong Zhuo to defend his love. He married Diaochan and the pair went on the run together when the assassins of Dong Zhuo are driven from Chang'an by Li Jue and Guo Si. Diaochan is mentioned at random one more time later in the novel, yet her fate is ultimately unknown.

A touching story, maybe, and one vaguely rooted in history. Overall, however, it's largely romanticised and made up. While some texts point out that Lü Bu had an affair with a servant girl during his time in service of Dong Zhuo, other sources point towards Diaochan simply being the style name for Lü Bu's wife. One way or another, love was not the reason for Lü Bu's eventual betrayal of Dong Zhuo. The real reason was simpler yet also a bit anticlimactic. Differences in personalities and past clashes led to the two men simply growing to hate each other, which is why Lü Bu joined the plot against Dong Zhuo. The story of Diaochan is a more romantic way to put this, yet it is just that: a story.
