Biography[]

Despite Duosi being a unique character, he never actually existed. He first appears in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms where he was most likely added just to add some flavour to south-western China. The Nanman barely left any records, leaving information about the region during the Three Kingdoms period rather sparse and mainly from the point of view from the Han Chinese.

In any case, Duosi first appears in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms as a general under Meng Huo. The Nanman people during the time were being conquered and pitted against each other in the greater conflict between Shu-Han and Wu. Meng Huo had hit a run of bad luck and his lands were going to be conquered by Shu-Han unless the tribes under him could win a decisive victory. Duosi stepped up to defeat the invading army. He supposedly led Shu-Han general Zhuge Liang to a natural chokepoint full of dangerous flora and poisonous water sources where they would be trapped and left to die.

Apparently, Zhuge Liang didn't care or just straight up didn't notice as his army easily made it past the valley to which they were led. Meng Huo and Duosi tried to make a run for it, but were captured by Yang Feng, another nanman chief who had a grudge against Meng Huo, who brought them to Zhuge. Zhuge Liang released the pair, disregarding Yang Feng's tactics as cowardly. Duosi would die in battle later on, only having achieved a handful of minor victories.
