The Earl of Uxbridge and his men are a regiment of heavy cavalry in Napoleon: Total War.
Description[]
Uxbridge is an exceptional cavalry commander, and can sway the course of a battle with his leadership.
His presence alone is enough to inspire battle-weary troops to fight on, even in the bleakest of situations: a general who carries the respect of his troops (if not his fellow officers) is a valuable asset. Although cavalrymen lead from the front, it is advisable to keep this man away from particularly dangerous fights, for his protection if nothing else.
Henry Paget, the Earl of Uxbridge, later Marquis of Anglesey, was Wellington's cavalry commander during the 1815 Waterloo campaign. This was not a comfortable arrangement for either of them, as Paget had proved himself to be something less than a gentleman by seducing, and running off with, the wife of Wellington's youngest brother. This social gaffe put a bit of a crimp on what had been a distinguished military career as a cavalry leader. Nobody denied that Paget was courageous and skilful, but he was a cad and a bounder. He is also the man who had his leg shot off at Waterloo in the middle of a conversation with Wellington. It is not recorded whether their dry exchange of remarks: "By God, sir, I've lost my leg!" and "By God, sir, so you have!" was accompanied by an excusable smirk on Wellington's behalf.
General Information[]
Along with D'Erlon and Michel Ney, the Earl of Uxbridge is one of the only units that are unique to the Battle of Waterloo. The Earl of Uxbridge and his men are statistically identical to Horse Guards and are tied for the best heavy cavalry available to Great Britain, but are slightly superior as his regiment is not impetuous and thus does not sometimes disregard orders. He and his men are some of the best heavy cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo, where he is initially positioned to the left-rear of the British army.
When playing on either side of the battle in 3v3 or 4v4 games, the Earl of Uxbridge counts as a general, and should he be killed, the British army's morale is negatively affected. In 1v2 and 2v2 games, however, the Earl of Uxbridge counts as a standard cavalry unit, and is thus more expendable.
Notes[]
The Earl of Uxbridge's description panel indicates that he costs 1020 gold to recruit; however, as he is only available for the Battle of Waterloo, where he is made available for free, it is impossible to recruit him without modding.
