Echigo is a province in Total War: Shogun 2, Rise of the Samurai, and Fall of the Samurai.

Echigo is a moderately wealthy province located to the north of Honshu. During the Sengoku Jidai, Echigo was ruled by Uesugi Kenshin, a great warlord who became famous for his long rivalry with Takeda Shingen. Kenshin had lived in Echigo all his life and was originally called Nagao Kagetora, but he changed his name when he was adopted into the Uesugi clan. It was also in Echigo that nishikigoi, the colourful variety of the common carp that are now commonplace as pets, were first produced through selective breeding.

Total War: Shogun 2Edit

Echigo is home to the Uesugi Clan. Echigo's massive size makes it difficult to invade or attack from, particularly in the early game when roads are not upgraded. It also borders many provinces, making the Uesugi starting position a precarious one as it can be invaded by multiple factions.

Echigo is the only province in the eastern half of the map to have a naval tradition, boosting trade profits of any faction that owns it. This handily stacks with the Uesugi Clan's innately increased trade income, and makes it a useful target for the Date Clan, Takeda Clan, Hojo Clan, and the Ikko Ikki.

Echigo borders Uzen to the north-east, Fukushima to the south-east, Kozuke to the south, North Shinano to the south-west, and Etchu to the west. It is also very close to the island of Sado.
