S2TW Encampment

For other uses of the term, see Encampment.

The Encampment is a type of improvement building in Total War: Shogun 2.

Description

There must be a first step in every march.

All warriors need somewhere to be gathered during recruitment, and somewhere to live whilst they are being trained. An encampment can have the air of a permanent military town, with bustle and apparent confusion all around. It does, however, make it easier and cheaper to recruit new units and organise regular drafts of replacements for existing units.

Encampments had to be well organised, otherwise so many people in close proximity to each other would not stay healthy for long. The discipline of camp life had a secondary benefit - it was always wise for rulers to keep their fighting men separate from troublesome civilians. Apart from anything else, civilians have at least one awkward idea: they like to make a profit from bored soldiers through drink, women and gambling. Most soldiers are entirely happy to go along with these schemes, but discipline can suffer as a result. During the Sengoku Jidai, the number of ashigaru in all armies grew (no clan dared be left behind with a numerically small army) but recruiting commoners meant an inevitable departure from the high disciplinary standards of the samurai, with their code of bushido.

General Information

Requires Heaven and Earth art, empty town slot, 850 koku, 3 turns. Can be upgraded to Armoury, Barracks, Hunting Lodge, Jujutsu Dojo or Proving Grounds

Encampments reduce the recruiting cost of any land unit built in provinces they are in, making them excellent to build in regions that are recruiting hubs. The increase to replenishment rate makes provinces with encampments ideal for damaged units to recuperate in.

Encampments may be upgraded into a variety of buildings that improve units in different ways, and these buildings' effects all stack with those of others. Encampments upgraded into Hunting Lodges, for example, grant +5 accuracy, and this stacks with the effects of Master Bowmakers' +20 accuracy for a total of +25 accuracy. Such provinces would be ideal for training missile units in. Encampments and their upgrades therefore help maximize the potential of troops.

With the DLC, several units, including the Oda Long Yari Ashigaru, Takeda Fire Cavalry, and Hojo Hand Mortars can be trained at provinces with encampments or their upgrades.
