The Firing Range is a type of improvement chain building in Fall of the Samurai.
Description[]
"Squeeze the trigger! You great foolish lump! Squeeze!"
A firing range gives every recruit and soldier a chance to practice with their firearms, under the disapproving eyes of their drill sergeants. This mild "baptism of fire" improves unit accuracy. Marksmanship was a completely wasted skill when infantry carried smoothbore muskets. An average infantryman was lucky to hit a target more than a few paces away. Industrialisation in the 19th Century made it possible to make rifled weapons at a low cost, and give one to every soldier in an army. All of a sudden, skill-at-arms, and particularly paced, accurate firing, became a practical proposition. A trained man with a rifle could, with practice, reliably hit a man-sized target hundreds of yards away. The key requirement was practice, but a unit which had been properly trained, or had been blooded in action, could make any advancing foe pay dearly for every yard gained.
General Information[]
Requires: 4000 koku, 5 turns, Training Camp.
- -10% to the cost of recruiting land units in this province
- +15 to the accuracy of all units recruited in this province
Firing ranges substantially increase the accuracy of all missile units, greatly increasing their killing power. The accuracy bonus stacks with those of the blacksmith chain of buildings. A region with both a firing range and a gunsmith grants a total of +35 accuracy, the highest increase possible.
Building firing ranges prevents the construction of other improvement buildings, so units with the accuracy bonus provided miss out on the charging, morale, melee, and replenishment rate bonus other improvement buildings provide. However, the increased accuracy is arguably the best for missile units. Firing ranges are considered military buildings, and therefore benefit from events that reduce the construction times and costs of upgrading them.
Despite their modern appearance and description, firing ranges benefit traditional units such as Bow Kachi, Matchlock Kachi, and Shinsengumi Police Force.
