Biography[]
Gao Shun was an officer under Lü Bu in the latter half of the 190s. Where he came from prior to serving under him is unknown. In 196, the disloyal Hao Meng rebelled against Lü Bu, which led to the latter fleeing to Gao Shun's army camp. Shun then restored order, driving away Hao Meng's forces from their position, with Meng later being killed by a subordinate loyal to Lü Bu. After this incident, he became one of Lü Bu's more favoured officers, though the two did on occasion clash.
In the following days, Gao Shun led a small but elite force that often acted as a spearhead for the rest of the army behind them, trained to fearlessly break through the enemy lines and disrupt their formations. In 198 AD, with Lü Bu increasingly driven into a corner by a coalition between Cao Cao and Liu Bei, Gao Shun was deployed against Cao Cao's forces. He defeated both Xiahou Dun and Liu Bei, yet this did not prevent Lü Bu from being driven into Xiapi City, where he would ultimately be defeated in a siege. Gao Shun and a fellow officer, Chen Gong, were outside Xiapi at the time, yet they could not intervene. Not for lack of trying, but because they were betrayed by another officer under Lü Bu, Hou Cheng, who captured the two men and delivered them straight to the enemy camp. The two remained there as prisoners until the surrender of Lü Bu. When, after much deliberation, Cao Cao ordered Lü Bu to be executed, this order was extended to Gao Shun and Chen Gong, who met the same fate as their leader.
