Grenadiers of the Line

Grenadiers of the Line are a type of grenadier in Napoleon: Total War.

Description[]

Grenadiers are large, strong men, armed with muskets and a fearsome reputation.

Grenadiers see themselves as elite soldiers, and occupy the place of honour at the right of the line on parade. They have good reason: only large, brave men become grenadiers, this size and strength makes them an impressive sight in a charge. It also gives them an advantage in melee combat. Grenadiers are a proud group and this pride makes for dedicated soldiers who will follow orders to the letter. Like other infantry, they must exercise caution when facing heavy cavalry, but they are also vulnerable to attack from skirmishers.

Historically, grenadier regiments and battalions began as ad-hoc assault groups. All line infantry regiments had grenadier companies; collecting these sub-units gave commanders a useful group of heavily armed, aggressive and skilful soldiers. Grenadier companies remained in line infantry regiments after the creation of grenadier regiments, but they largely abandoned using grenades: instead, each grenadier company became a “heavy mob” of the biggest and strongest soldiers in a regiment!

General Information[]

The grenadiers of the line are the standard grenadiers of France. Like other grenadiers, they have superior melee stats to their line infantry counterparts and can throw short-ranged explosives at the cost of having a smaller regiment size. In particular, grenadiers of the line have a far better charging bonus, accentuating their role of being melee-oriented shock troops. Unlike some grenadiers of other factions, grenadiers of the line have better accuracy than their line infantry counterparts, and match them in terms of reloading, though their ranged killing potential is still inferior due to their smaller regiment sizes. As line infantry are not a strength of France's unit roster, grenadiers of the line can help shore up some of their weaknesses--although they cannot replace fusiliers altogether due to their smaller regiment sizes and greater cost.

While grenadiers of the line are available in unlimited number across the Egypt, Europe, and Peninsular campaigns, only one regiment is initially available to France in the Italy Campaign. France gains one more regiment of grenadiers of the line after completing a mission, "A Matter of Supply", but it cannot recruit more.
