Biography[]

Generals and soldiers aren't enough to rule territory. Gongsun Zan was a formidable general, and his army was highly skilled and motivated, but he needed someone for the day-to-day operations of the realm. This is where Guan Jing stepped in. He served as Gongsun Zan's most important clerk since the fall of the coalition against Dong Zhuo.

When Yuan Shao invaded Gongsun Zan's territory a second time, they were forced back into their capital in 198 after a string of defeats. Gongsun Zan wanted to ride out of the city to lift the siege by attacking Yuan Shao's rear, but Guan Jing advised against it, opting to wait for Gongsun Xu to return with Zhang Yan's Black Mountain bandits. Xu would never make it in time.

Gongsun Zan was eventually deceived by Yuan Shao in early 199, believing that reinforcements had arrived. He rode out of the gate with his army, only for them to get slaughtered by Shao's army waiting in an ambush. Zan survived but committed suicide so as not to be captured by Shao.

With the army reduced to a handful of disorganized bands and most officers dead, Guan Jing calmly mounted his horse and rode into Yuan Shao's lines towards his inevitable death.
