Biography[]

He Jin was born in Nanyang commandery to He Zhen and was the elder half-brother of Lady He, who later became Empress He, the wife to Emperor Ling of the Han Dynasty. As his half-sister rose through the ranks in the imperial harem, so too did He Jin in the military, becoming the "General of the Household, Rapid as a Tiger". He was later appointed administrator on top of his military duties. He also received various titles closer to the imperial court thanks to his connection to the empress, which made him closer to the emperor and subsequently grew his own influence.

In 184 AD, He Jin was appointed general of the Northern Army, which was easily the most elite of the Chinese armies at the time thanks to their valuable experience defending the frontiers against Xiongnu attacks. He also foiled a Yellow Turban plot in Luoyang and grew ever more important in imperial politics in spite of protests from the Ten Attendants, the faction of important eunuchs with a high degree of control over the emperor.

When Emperor Ling died in 189 AD, He Jin worked together with his half-sister to secure her son, Liu Bian, as the new Emperor. He Jin was granted partial control over the Imperial Secretariat, which also resulted in He Jin having partial control over the imperial government to the dismay of the eunuchs, which found themselves increasingly sidelined. Immediately, they began plotting against He Jin under a eunuch by the name of Jian Shi. He Jin and Jian Shi had clashed before, and He Jin used his new powers to rid himself of the eunuch for good, killing him and his co-conspirators. What followed was a series of small-scale purges of corruption in the imperial government, getting rid of Dowager Dong (the mother of Emperor Ling) as well as some of the less prominent eunuchs.

Yuan Shao, a militarist close to the imperial government, urged He Jin to increase his attacks on the eunuchs, yet Empress Dowager He argued against it. Torn between the two sides, He Jin made a half-hearted attempt to scare the eunuchs in line by recalling troops and summoning the dreaded warlord Dong Zhuo to the capital. Before Dong Zhuo arrived, however, another eunuch conspiracy led by Zhang Rang ambushed He Jin and killed him. Upon learning of the news, an infuriated Yuan Shao stormed the palaces of Luoyang with a small army in tow, slaughtering every eunuch they could get their hands on as the capital descended into chaos. As Luoyang was engulfed in an uncontrolled inferno, Dong Zhuo arrived just in time to find the child emperor and his younger brother being smuggled out of the city by a group of eunuchs, which he promptly killed. He seized the two boys for himself and later named himself regent, which would become the catalyst for the Rise of the Warlords and the main events of Total War: Three Kingdoms.

By killing He Jin in a last bid to regain their relevancy, the eunuchs had not only hurt themselves, going from important cogs in the administration to being executed in droves by the military but had also set in motion the events that would lead to the rapid collapse of the Han Empire which made way for regional warlords and governors acting as the true government in their respective regions.
