Rome's violent foundation foreshadowed the political and military infighting that still occurs between its great families. The patrician families of Rome, including the Scipii, claim descent from the adventurers, exiles and warriors Romulus recruited to help establish his great city.

They are aristocrats, and use their privilege and power in Rome's interests, and their own. They have produced able politicians and generals; the two go hand-in-hand in Rome, as political success rarely comes without competence on the battlefield.

The Scipii are, however, not quite of the first rank, which makes them keen to prove themselves to the other families. They are extravagantly wealthy, and not afraid to show it. They also have a taste for Greek learning and culture. These non-Roman ways surprise and concern more conservative Romans. Nevertheless, the Scipii have the political skills and military renown to make their family the greatest in Rome, and possibly rulers of the world. For now, they may only control a couple of provinces, but their ambitions are boundless.
