Biography[]

Historical records about Huang Zu are scattered across different texts, and he lacks an official biography.

As Administrator of Jiangxia Commandery, he likely hailed from a prominent local family. When Liu Biao took governorship of Jing Province, he allied with local elites, including the Huang family. Liu Biao provided financial aid during peacetime and military support in wartime, allowing Huang Zu to maintain considerable autonomy over Jiangxia Commandery despite being Liu Biao's nominal subordinate.

In 191, war erupted between half-brothers Yuan Shao and Yuan Shu, as expected between them. Yuan Shao allied with Liu Biao, while Yuan Shu, with Sun Jian, attacked Liu Biao's territories in Jing Province. Liu Biao assigned Huang Zu to defend Fancheng and Dengzhou, but Huang Zu lost to Sun Jian and retreated to Xiangyang Commandery. Huang Zu launched a failed sneak attack on Sun Jian, who later died from a stray arrow while pursuing him into a forest. The ambush was set up by Kuai Liang and Lü Gong.

In 200, after Sun Ce was ambushed and assassinated, which was something of a deja vu, his brother Sun Quan became the warlord of Jiangdong. In 203, Sun Quan invaded Xiakou, appointing Ling Cao to lead the vanguard. Ling Cao broke through Huang Zu's defences but was killed by a stray arrow from Gan Ning, a subordinate of Huang Zu, allowing Huang Zu to retreat to Jiangxia Commandery. Afterwards, Gan Ning was recommended to be promoted, but Huang Zu tried to entice Gan Ning's followers to abandon him. Displeased, Gan Ning defected to Sun Quan. Sun Quan continued engaging Huang Zu in battles over the following years, though none were decisive as Sun Quan was also quelling rebellions in Jiangdong.

In spring 208, Gan Ning advised Sun Quan to attack Jiangxia Commandery, noting Huang Zu's weakness. It went poorly for Huang Zu, as he was killed during the battle.
