Biography[]

Like most characters in the Three Kingdoms period, details of Huangfu Song's early life are unknown. He first appears in the records serving as a commander in the imperial army of Emperor Ling. Once the Yellow Turban Rebellion broke out, Song ended up receiving the ungrateful task of putting an end to it. While he did – with some struggles along the way – manage to defeat both Zhang Liang and Zhang Bao, the Yellow Turban Rebellion was far from over as new groups rose up in every corner of China.

The Han Dynasty was in a state of collapse, and Song was well aware of this. He spoke out openly against the Ten Attendants and refused to take their bribes. This led to him being banished from entering Luoyang. However, this did not change the general's convictions: he was unwaveringly loyal to the Han, just not to the eunuchs that ruled it. Once Dong Zhuo took over the Han Dynasty as regent of Emperor Xian, the same situation occurred as had happened under the eunuchs. Song was loyal to the Han, just not to Dong Zhuo himself. Tensions grew until Song was eventually arrested but later released.

What followed was an uneasy truce as Song technically served under Dong Zhuo yet outright refused to follow any of his orders. It should come as no surprise, then, that Song partook in the plot to have Dong Zhuo assassinated. However, Dong Zhuo's successor, Li Jue, proved to be just as bad, if not worse. At this point, Song had grown old and tired. With the Han Empire having collapsed into a small rump state ruled by a tyrant and a puppet child Emperor, he knew all hope was lost for the dynasty. Song died in 195 to an unknown illness.
