Hypaspists are a type of spearmen unit available to the Macedonians in Rome: Total War: Alexander.

Though much exact information regarding the Hypaspists has been lost, it seems clear that they were primarily spearmen whose role it was to provide a link between the slow-moving heavy infantry and the more mobile Macedonian cavalry. Their lighter equipment allows them to react quickly in battle, screening the vulnerable flanks of the Phalangists or exploiting weaknesses in the enemy line, though they should not be expected to bear the brunt of any prolonged fighting. They are armed with spears, some of which can be thrown as the needed arises. Though they may not seem the most impressive Macedonian troops when compared to the Companions or Phalangists, their flexibility and mobility makes them more than useful and most generals will learn to love them during a prolongued campaign, as Alexander did.
