Hyuga is a province in Total War: Shogun 2, Rise of the Samurai, and Fall of the Samurai.
Description[]
Hyuga is situated on the east coast of Kyushu. Although it gives a relatively poor rice yield, the province does boast a variety of other agricultural produce. The capital of Saito is known for the Saitobaru burial mounds, a large collection of tumuli built during the Kofun and Asuka periods of Japanese history.
Total War: Shogun 2[]
- Clan: Ito Clan (home)
- Port: None
- Fertility: Barren
- Specialty/Resource: None
Hyuga is undoubtedly the worst province to own in Kyushu and ranks among the poorest provinces in Shogun 2, with no specialty, barren fertility, and no port. While Hyuga is a poor province, owning it (or causing a rebel force to take it) is an important step to securing all of Kyushu, which is a very lucrative endeavour in the long run thanks to its proximity to many trade nodes.
Hyuga is the home province of the Ito Clan, making it a natural target for the hostile Shimazu Clan. The neighbouring Otomo Clan may also annex Hyuga in the early game. The capital of Hyuga lies near its northern border, which makes invading it from Bungo relatively easy. Invading it from the south, however, requires several turns for most armies unless its roads have been upgraded well.
Hyuga borders Osumi to the south-west, Satsuma to the west, Higo to the north-west, and Bungo to the north. While it nominally shares a border with Higo, the two are separated by an impassable mountain range.
Rise of the Samurai[]
- Clan: Takahashi (Taira)
- Port: None
- Fertility: Barren
- Specialty/Resource: Iron
Hyuga is considerably more useful than its Shogun 2 incarnation, thanks to its iron resource. It is the westernmost province to have iron, and is a possible source of iron for the Yashima Taira (though Mimasaka is considerably closer to its borders). Like all provinces in the western third of the map, Hyuga is largely irrelevant for all other playable factions due to how far it is from them until well after Realm Divide.
Fall of the Samurai[]
Hyuga returns in Fall of the Samurai. It is far more useful than its Shogun 2 counterpart, having the valuable tea resource as well as a port. It is by far the westernmost province to have tea, making it the closest tea province to the Satsuma, Saga, Choshu and Tosa domains.
The owners of Hyuga, the Nobeoka, are neighbouring Satsuma's only initial enemy, and Hyuga is a natural path of expansion for the Satsuma.
