Illyria is a minor non-playable faction featured in Rome: Total War: Alexander. They control just one settlement, north of Greece, on the campaign map.
Tactics[]
Illyria is a non-playable faction in the campaign and doesn't prove much of a threat to Alexander. Unlike Thrace, the other nearby barbarian nation, Illyria has the added protection of a thick forest and mountains to protect them from Macedon, who is directly south to them. They are a city state, like Thrace, but are harder to reach and as such will likely be the second nation to be defeated, rather than the first. They're harass Alexander and his armies/settlements if kept unchecked, but with just one city they're not too much to handle.
Illyria has their primary walled settlement but also a fort just the other side of the mountains and forest, where an army is camped. Any Macedonian armies attempting to get through the forest will likely be ambushed. Even if they are not, they will have to assault the barbarian fort, which will be costly. The mountains and trees give them a perfect spot to ambush any Macedonian armies attempting to reach them. Their armies are split into two relatively similar size armies, one guarding the settlement and the other camped in the fort. The best way to deal with Illyria is to instead head to the left of the mountains, going along the coast, and ignoring the fort entirely. In a few turns, a Macedonian army can be besieging the town, forcing the camped Illyria army to either come attempt to relieve the siege or push on and try to take a Macedonian city. Either way, as soon as the Illyria settlement is taken, the faction will be destroyed as it's their only settlement on the map. Any armies they have will either be disbanded or turn into rebel armies.
