"Versatile camel-mounted auxiliary troops, well-suited to the local terrain."
'Dromedarii' were camel-riding auxiliary troops recruited in the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire and designed to take the place of light horse cavalry when fighting in desert conditions. Although useful for screening infantry and scouting ahead, they were also used to counter horsemen, due to the natural aversion of horses to the smell of camels. Due to their geographical location dromedarii were peculiar to the Eastern Romans, providing a useful indigenous cavalry force for fighting along their frontier with Sassanid Persia.
