Surrounded by a hand-picked guard of spear-armed heavy horsemen, the general has sufficient protection to enable him to go where the fighting is thickest to issue orders directly to his troops and shore up flagging morale with encouragements, mockery or threats! A well-judged charge by his guards can swing a battle in his favour and their equipment is of such quality that they can continue the fight hand to hand if necessary. The loss of the general is often enough to break the spirit of his army though, as well as being an unpleasant experience for the great man himself, so many generals choose to operate in a reserve role, waiting to spot an opportunity to enter the fray decisively.
