Biography[]

Ji Ling is a bit of an enigma, as nothing is known about his early life or later life. In fact, he is only mentioned in one event. He was a general for Yuan Shu in 196, leading an army to attack Liu Bei. Liu Bei requested aid from Lü Bu, who led a small force to assist. While Ji Ling's army should've been sufficiently large enough to defeat both, Lü Bu was such a terrifying force in China at the time that Ji Ling immediately halted his advance. However, what followed was one of few instances where Lü Bu favoured diplomacy over violence.

Lü Bu set up camp one mile away from Ji Ling and both generals invited each over to attend feasts. When Lü Bu travelled to Ji Ling's camp, he had a Ji – a Chinese halberd – placed in the ground at the edge of Ling's camp. He proposed a wager that he could hit the bottom part of the blade with an arrow from far away, which Ji Ling accepted. If Lü Bu could pull it off, Ji Ling would withdraw his forces without a fight. Sure enough, Lü Bu hit the blade where he said he would and Ji Ling retreated soon after, being never mentioned in the history books again.

Ji Ling has a more prominent role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, where he fights alongside Yuan Shu against Liu Bei and also duels with Guan Yu at one point. In the novel, he is killed in an ambush by Zhang Fei.
