Ji Militia fleeing from a failed siege

Ji Militia fleeing from a failed siege

Peasant militia armed with polearms; an expendable but versatile main force on the frontlines.

The thunderous pounding of hooves, the blackening of the air as dirt is flung from galloping legs, and the impending impact of a horse in full charge can be an almost apocalyptic vision of terror for a humble foot soldier. These militia troops are therefore armed with ji polearms, which are ‘dagger-axes’ with an angled blade attached to the top and a spear added to the tip. These versatile weapons extend the user’s reach and enable the wielder to slash and pierce riders, or dismount them by hooking their neck and pulling.

General Information[]

Ji militia are cheap and available to all generals from the beginning of the game. They are infantry geared towards fending off enemy cavalry. However, they are extremely weak to enemy infantry thanks to their poor melee stats, and they're just as vulnerable to archers thanks to their weak armor and lack of shields. Even cavalry can do well against them if they are attacked from the flank or rear.

Ji militia are at their best when they are braced (stationary) while facing a cavalry charge. They will still take heavy damage even in this ideal situation. While they are found in many early game armies, they are quickly outclassed by better spear or ji-equipped troops. They still appear often in the late game as parts of garrisons.
