Biography[]

Jia Cong began his career in the Han Dynasty administration like many others. He was recognized as Filial and Incorrupt and appointed a county magistrate in Henan. In 184, he was redeployed to become the Inspector of Jiao in southern China after they had rebelled and overthrown the previous (corrupt) Inspector. Once he arrived in Jiao, the government in Luoyang ordered Cong to put an end to the rebellion by any means necessary. However, Cong did not immediately begin assembling an army, instead choosing to negotiate with the rebels. Cong soon found out that Jiao was being overtaxed by the Empire and that the previous Inspector had been bribed to not do anything about it.

Cong sent a letter to Luoyang demanding that the imperial government cease their extortionist taxation immediately. Furthermore, he only had ringleaders and the most infamous rebels arrested, whereas he let the rest simply return home. By 185, Jiao had been pacified completely, and Jia Cong enjoyed the full support of the local population. By 187, Cong was redeployed to Ji Province, another problematic area of China that had previously been ravaged by the Yellow Turban Rebellion.

When Emperor Ling died in 189, Jia Cong was reassigned again, not as an Inspector but as a field general. As the "General on the Liao", he defended the Han Empire until his eventual death. The year in which he died is unknown.
