The Kingdom of Italy begins the European Campaign controlling the region of Milan in northern Italy. It is bordered by the Swiss Confederation to the north, the Papal States to the south, France to the west, and Austria to the east. It is allied with France and its allies, and at war with almost all of the coalition. Unlike France's other allies, it has no historical grievances with France and is a reliable ally. French forces are present in the region at the beginning of the campaign.
Milan is a rich region, with a multi-slot city, a gold mine, wine resources, and a college. Therefore, the Kingdom of Italy can become quite powerful if it survives the early stages of the game. It is capable of doing so with the support of France: the Papal States to its south are friendly with it, and essentially its only immediate threats are neighboring Austria and the Russian army in Austrian lands.
Like all Italian factions, the Kingdom of Italy cannot emerge through liberation or rebellion. Should either occur in Milan, Italy emerges instead. If the Kingdom of Italy is destroyed, it is permanently removed from the game.
Diplomacy[]
The Kingdom of Italy tends to ally with the Papal States a couple dozen turns into the game, and tries to invade Austrian lands to the north and east. Unlike many of France's other allies, the Kingdom of Italy doesn't have historical friendships with most of the coalition, nor does it have any grievances with France. This makes the Kingdom of Italy a more reliable ally to France than factions such as the Swiss Confederation or the Batavian Republic.
Below is a list of grievances/friendships other factions have with the Kingdom of Italy initially. This list is exhaustive; factions that are not listed do not have friendships or grievances (they are neutral).

This list is exhaustive; factions that are not listed do not have friendships or grievances (they are neutral). As the Kingdom of Italy cannot emerge from liberation or rebellion, it has no friendship/grievance set of relationship points with other factions that cannot emerge.

Military[]
The Kingdom of Italy has access to guard artillery, which are superior to standard artillery. This makes their artillery some of the best in the game, and definitely the best among the minor factions. Unfortunately, Milan does not have an ordnance building, and the Kingdom of Italy rarely replaces one of its initial buildings with one. The Kingdom of Italy also has one each of infantry and cavalry units unique to their faction: the Velite Grenadiers (elite infantry) and the Guards of Honour (elite heavy cavalry), respectively. Along with France, the Kingdom of Italy is one of only two factions that can train Chasseurs à Cheval, though the Italian Chasseurs à Cheval are much worse than their French counterparts.
The Kingdom of Italy lacks several unit types. It cannot recruit any lancers, severely limiting the offensive capabilities of its cavalry. It also lacks skirmishers.
