Boshin military kneel fire

For the similar Empire: Total War technology, see Fire by Rank.

Kneel Fire is a military technology in Fall of the Samurai.

Description[]

Together they fire,

Bound by sacred brotherhood.

Divided they fall.

With a new gun in every hand, a modern regiment looks fierce and proud. Yet if the men cannot fire in a disciplined way, what use are the modern guns? When all fire together, few can stand before them. And so modernity must have purpose, or it is a meaningless affectation. The dictates of fashion will kill the fools who follow them.

General Information[]

Requires Level 3 clan development, 8 turns. Unlocks Suppression Fire.

  • +1 to modernisation (clan development)
  • Enables the "Kneel Fire" ability

Kneel Fire is a toggled ability for line infantry, causing the first rank to kneel so that the first and second ranks can fire simultaneously. This greatly increases the amount of firepower line infantry can employ in an area, but they cannot be ordered to move until the ability is turned off. They may still be disrupted and shift their positions as a result of being attacked by melee troops, in which case they have to be ordered out of kneel firing to reposition. A regiment of experienced guard infantry with kneel fire can rout anything that comes within range within a matter of seconds, and even the most inexperienced line infantry can still deal respectable damage when set up at a good angle with kneel fire.

With no technology prerequisites, kneel fire can be researched as soon as level 3 modernization is reached. Factions with large numbers of line infantry benefit the most from kneel fire.

Kneel Fire is extremely useful on larger unit settings: on ultra settings, stretching a line infantry regiment as far as possible results in two ranks of one hundred men each, meaning that a regiment with kneel fire provides twice as much firepower as one that doesn't. On smaller unit settings, however, line infantry regiments stretched out as far as possible result in a single rank or two ranks with a greatly diminished second rank, which mitigates the usefulness of kneel fire. Even on smaller settings, kneel fire is useful for concentrating as much firepower as possible into a small area.

Kneel fire does not benefit light infantry, militia, or traditional units in any way. Shinsengumi Police Force do not gain access to kneel fire even though they are classified as line infantry.
