Biography[]

Lady Wu was the daughter of a prestigious family from Wu commandery. Both her parents died early, leaving her orphaned alongside her brother, Wu Jing. She grew up to be quite the looker, as it turns out because her reputation reached the ears of Sun Jian, who chose to marry her, much to the displeasure of Lady Wu's relatives.

When Sun Jian died in an ambush in 191, Sun Ce forced Lady Wu – with the rest of his siblings – to seek safety in the court of Wu Jing, who was under the protection of Yuan Shu. With his family secured, and with the aid of Yuan Shu, Sun Ce began a rapid conquest of the south in 194, ending in 199 with the conquest of Wu commandery. With Wu safe, Sun Ce relocated his family – Lady Wu included – to Wu commandery.

Lady Wu had picked up an impressive amount of knowledge on politics from her husband and brother, and aided Sun Ce wherever she could, albeit from the sidelines. When Ce was assassinated in 200, the young Sun Quan took control, relying much on his mother as he tried to settle into power. Most notably, she was a vocal opponent of Cao Cao in the north and steered her son towards fighting against the Duke of Wei.

Lady Wu died in 202. She was posthumously crowned as Empress Wulie of Wu in 229 after Sun Quan declared himself to be the emperor of China.

Trivia[]

  • Lady Wu's family name is Wu, and is (confusingly) unrelated to the Kingdom of Wu that Sun Quan would found in 229.
