Biography[]

Much has been written about Liao Hua; little of it is true. His historical life is rather unremarkable. A career officer, he fought under Guan Yu in Jing province. When Jing fell to Wu, Liao Hua falsely defected, escaping two years later and rejoining Shu-Han's army under Zhuge Liang, where he enjoyed some successes. He received some titles and praise but was ultimately captured by the Kingdom of Wei. On the road to Luoyang as a prisoner, he was ambushed and killed.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms paints an entirely different story, however. Guan Yu stumbled upon Liao Hua, who proclaims that he was a former Yellow Turban, for which there is no real evidence. Hua is guarding a carriage whose occupants are Lady Mi and Lady Gan, two of Liu Bei's wives. They had been kidnapped by bandits and were ultimately rescued by Hua. Guan Yu accepted the ladies but didn't trust a Yellow Turban, even a former one. He escorted the pair further, leaving Hua behind.

At a later date, Guan Yu would run into Liao Hua again and had a change of heart, giving him a chance. Soon after, Liao Hua became one of Guan Yu's most loyal and mighty soldiers. In 220, Guan Yu was besieged at Maicheng – a historical event that led to Yu's death – where Liao Hua supposedly escaped the settlement by charging through the enemy lines. He tried and failed to convince two commanders in the area, Meng Da and Liu Feng, to assist Guan Yu but both refused, leading to his master dying in the siege. Afterwards, Hua complained to Liu Bei, though nothing came of it.

In the rest of the novel, Liao Hua is portrayed as often fighting against Sima Yi and duelling against low-ranking Wei and Wu generals for Shu-Han. Unlike his real death (being captured and killed in an ambush), Liao Hua dies of heartbreak or grief depending on your translation of the story.
