Historical Context[]

The Lingqu Canal is an ancient canal located in China's Guanxi Province. It was constructed in 214 BC at the orders of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. The canal connects the Xiang and Li rivers and, as a result, the Yangtze with the Yu River. Initially built to aid in the conquest of the Baiyue people, the Lingqu Canal eventually became a major trade artery for in-land China. It has been maintained continuously by various Chinese states to the modern day and remains in use today. It is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site due to its importance to Chinese history and its feat of engineering.
