Biography[]

Liu Yao was born in 156 in Donglai commandery. He was the younger son of Liu Fang and the brother of Liu Dai. He was appointed Filial & Incorrupt but never found his footing in the Han administration. He mostly drifted between minor administrative positions on a county level. When the Han Empire began its collapse in the 190s with the rise of Dong Zhuo, Liu Yao fled south to avoid the chaos. However, he unexpectedly received a promotion from the Imperial court controlled by Dong Zhuo, appointing him as inspector of Yang province, then under the control of Yuan Shu.

Instead of heading for Yang, Liu Yao set up much further to the south in Danyang commandery on the southern banks of the Yangtze River. He soon found himself in a powerful position as he received many talented refugees fleeing from the north, who he integrated into his ranks. Confident in his ability to defend Danyang, he finally butted heads with Yuan Shu, forcing all his subordinates out of the south and driving them across the Yangtze. Despite multiple attempts, Yuan Shu's forces were unable to cross the Yangtze River. Soon after, the imperial government promoted Liu Yao to governor and general, solidifying his power.

However, things took a drastic turn for the worse for Liu Yao when Sun Ce forced his way through and crossed the Yangtze River in 195. Sun Ce, aggressive and quick, managed to repeatedly outmanoeuvre Liu Yao's forces. Before the year was over, Liu Yao's armies were defeated, and the governor fled westward, dying in 198. His family was left behind and captured by Sun Ce, though he treated them well, and some of Liu Yao's sons came to serve the Kingdom of Wu in later years.
