"The highest ranking general, only answerable to – and often more powerful than – the Emperor himself. "
The supreme generals of the Roman Empire during 4th and 5th centuries AD were given the title ‘Magister Militum’. It was a prestigious position, that, when awarded to a particularly shrewd or political animal, held power rivalling, and sometimes outstripping, even that of the Emperor. Originally created during the reforms of Constantine the Great the title initially covered two specific positions, the Magister Equitum, ‘Master of the Horse’ and Magister Peditum, ‘Master of the Foot’. Over the years these roles merged, with generals who held both titles simply referred to as Magister Militum, ‘Master of Soldiers’. Separate Magister Militums were installed within each Roman territory. The great irony, when viewed in hindsight, is that the position was originally created by Constantine to rob one particular political foe of power, the usually-treacherous Prefect of the Praetorian Guard. However, those who held it generally became the bane of the Emperors they claimed to serve or, as on numerous occasions, the real power behind the throne.
