Biography[]

The lands historically home to the Nanman were conquered by Shu-Han in the early 3rd century. After the death of Liu Bei in 223, a widespread revolt broke out across Nanzhong, though its purpose was vague even to its participants. Some were eager to switch sides to either Wu or Wei, while others wanted nothing to do with the Three Kingdoms that ruled China at the time. During this chaotic rebellion, Meng Huo experienced his rise to relevance. A local leader, he became one of the most important rebel leaders seeking to drive Shu-Han out of the area, going toe to toe with Zhuge Liang directly.

While he was eager to defeat Zhuge Liang, the chancellor of Shu-Han was far more experienced on the battlefield and commanded a far greater force. Meng Huo was beaten and captured seven separate times, being either released or broken out each time before finally admitting defeat. The regional Nanman king finally submitted to the authority of Shu-Han, at which point he faded from relevance. Or, at the very least, that is how the story goes.

The actual existence of Meng Huo is highly disputed. Many believe he is a fictional character like most Nanman characters mentioned in Romance of the Three Kingdoms. His power as a great Nanman king was highly exaggerated in the novel, as he was more akin to a local rebel leader in reality. Furthermore, the claim that he was captured and later freed or escaped seven times is also odd, as he would undoubtedly have been executed after being recaptured, especially after multiple imprisonments. Finally, "Huo", his supposed personal name, can be translated as "captured", which lines up with his supposed life story a bit too perfectly.

Undoubtedly, his life story has many embellishments and exaggerations, though the debate about whether or not he actually existed continues to this day. This is thanks to conflicting sources from different eras, some claiming he was an existing person, others claiming he wasn't.
