Biography[]
Born in Donghai Commandery in a rich family around 165, Mi Zhu and his brother, Mi Fang were said to be proficient in horseback riding and archery. Mi Zhu initially served under Tao Qian as an important assistant. He later joined forces with the Liu Bei, becoming one of his most trusted advisors and financiers. Mi Zhu's wealth and influence were crucial in supporting Liu Bei's military campaigns, especially during times of financial hardship. He was also Liu Bei's brother-in-law, as his younger sister, Lady Mi, was married to Liu Bei.
He was known for his kindness and grace along with being extremely loyal, who played a significant role in helping Liu Bei establish the state of Shu Han making him one of the most esteemed among Liu Bei's officials. He was something of a role model that many young officials look up to. Even Cao Cao once tried to entice Mi Zhu's services by offering him and his brother, Mi Fang, governships but Cao Cao's offers were turned down.
He was so dedicated and loyal that when his brother, Mi Fang defected to Sun Quan, Mi Zhu bounded himself and came to Liu Bei, pleading guilty for his brother's crime. Liu Bei consoled him, further told him that the fault of a brother shouldn't reach another and treated him the same as before but sadly, Liu Bei's consolations weren't enough. He was so ashamed of his brother's defection and crime that he felt ill and died in 221.
Chen Shou complimented him, saying that he, along with Sun Qian, Jian Yong and Yi Ji were "refined and cultured persons whose ideas were widely circulated. They were well known for their good observation of the proprieties". His son, Mi Wei, was also an expert in horseback riding and archery. And his son's son was also good at it, mastering mounted archery.
