Modernisation is a gameplay mechanic in Fall of the Samurai.
Description[]
In Fall of the Samurai as modernisation occurs levels of clan development will be unlocked, giving access to the next tier of technology. It is not possible to research new technology if sufficient modernisation has not taken place. Your clan development level is indicated on the campaign map, directly to the left of the radar map in the top right-hand corner of the screen. Mouse over a development icon to see the clan effects it brings. Left-click on one to access the relevant tier of the technology tree. Notice that the clan development levels are displayed there down the left-hand side of the panel.
General Information[]
Modernisation occurs when the factions research certain technologies or construct modern buildings. Lower modernisation results in higher happiness, as well as cheaper and more experienced traditional units. Higher modernisation results in less happiness in regions, but increases research rate and unlocks more technology.
Some buildings decrease modernisation, but more buildings, as well as all arts, increase modernisation. Generally, as a faction expands and invests money into its provinces, modernisation inevitably increases unless it is specifically avoided.
Clan Development[]
There is also a global effect for modernisation: this is called "Clan Development", and it is divided into four levels:
- Level 1 (base level):
- -20% to the recruitment of traditional units
- +2 to the morale of traditional units
- +2 to the experience of traditional units
- Level 2 (Leaving tradition behind erodes the skills of the past.):
- +10% to the research rate of technologies
- -1 to happiness from modernisation
- -10% to the recruitment costs of traditional units
- +1 to the morale of all traditional units
- +1 to the experience of all traditional units
- Level 3 (Adapting modern, foreign ways is right for Japan, but will the people accept them?):
- +25% to the research rate of technologies
- -2 to happiness from modernisation
- All general's bodyguard units have been upgraded to use revolvers.
- Level 4 (A fully modernised clan is the envy of Japan. The population will be made to understand).
- 50% to the research rate of technologies
- -3 to happiness from modernisation
- All general's bodyguard units have been upgraded to use revolvers.
