Ninjas are a type of character in Total War: Shogun 2.

General Information[]

Ninjas can be trained in any region with a Sake Den, for 500 koku. Provinces with the Mountain Hideout line of buildings and/or the Infamous Mizu Shobai District recruit ninja who have higher levels of experience. Hattori ninjas have a +2% chance of success.

Ninjas assassinate other characters, sabotages buildings and fort structures, sabotage armies (which causes their movement points to be used up), establish criminal networks in friendly provinces, and generally act as spies. While their skills in removing other agents is shared by most agents, their ability to sabotage armies and buildings is unique to ninja. Sabotaging armies not only causes them to be unable to move, but also leaves them unable to reinforce neighboring armies, greatly reducing the difficulty of fighting multiple stacks of units.

By default, ninjas are invisible to other factions, but they can be discovered by other ninjas or metsuke. They may also reveal themselves if they fail a mission.

Ninja can be specialized in many ways. A ninja with points in Noble Bandit and/or Criminal contacts can have the cost of their actions greatly reduced, or even eliminated--a useful trait for assassinating expensive targets or sabotaging large armies. Ninjas that specialize in points on the right side of the tree are extremely proficient at wounding or assassinating their targets. Ninja that put one point each in all of Ninjutsu's prerequisites and then all three points in ninjutsu have the highest chance of performing all actions, but at the cost of not having a higher critical chance, cost reduction of actions, or escaping undetected if failing.
