Pontus is a sub-faction of the Eastern Empires faction featured in Total War: Rome II, available as a DLC. They can field Bronze Shield Pikeman, Scythed Chariots, and Pontic Royal Cavalry.

Faction Bonuses[]

Eastern Empires Faction Bonus:

Great Marksmen: +25% ammunition for all units.

Persian Trade Heritage: +15% trade income

Hellenstic Culture: Shares culture with Factions: Macedon, Seleucid, Athens, Sparta, Epirus, and Pontus. Shares culture with Sub-Factions: Pergamon, Ardiai.

Sub-Faction Bonus[]

Mithridatic Dynasty: Originally part of the Persian satrapy of Cappadocia, Mithridates remained ruler of the area after Alexander's conquest. After the partition of Alexander's empire, his son fled from Antigonus, and successfully fought against Seleucus, re-establishing his dynasty in the process. Mithridates founded Pontus upon the ashes of Persian and Macedonian empires.

Barbarian Subduers: +10% morale when fighting barbarian tribes

Philhellenes: Moderate diplomatic bonus with all Hellenic factions (cultural affinity)

Forsaken Persian Origins: Major diplomatic penalty with all Eastern factions (cultural aversion)

Other Families: The Mithridatic court is a unique blend of coastal Greek culture and Iranian hinterland aristocracy, tracing its roots back to the Persian Empire.

Its modest appearance and apparently out-of-the-way position should not deceive: it is a strong, Hellenistic state, ably ruled, and with a strong army and navy. The Pontic kings are served by their agents: the Eyes of the king (Spy), Warlords (Champion), and Magi (Dignitary).

Technology Tree[]

Pontic: Military

Organized Supply: Reduces upkeep cost of Pontic military.

  • Management: Enables recruitment of Champions, reduces recruitment costs, and increases replenishment of military units.
  • Tactics: Improves military morale, movement, missile attack rate. Increases campaign movement range.
  • Siege: Improves sieging tactics, lowers attrition, and lowers siege unit costs.


Pontic: Civil

Social Organization: +1% wealth from agriculture.

  • Economy: Increases wealth from agriculture, trade, and commerce. Reduces agricultural and commercial construction costs. Increases food produced.
  • Construction: Increases growth. Increases wealth from industry. Reduces building construction costs.
  • Philosophy: Increases tax rates, public order, cultural conversion. Reduces political action costs and corruption in provinces.
